December 2013

RECENT HAPPENINGS:

Palatine Chapter #206, along with Loyal L. Munn Chapter #96, conferred the Most Excellent Master Degree on James Edgell on November 6, 2013.  We had a second candidate who, due to his time restraints, received his Chapter and Council Degrees at a Chapter/Council Day a short time ago.  He is John Riggs.  We are conferring the Royal Arch Degree on James Edgell on November 20, 2013.  By the time you read this it will be done.  Our next Convocation is on December 18, 2013.  That evening will be used by The Commandery for its Christmas Libations.  We are scheduled to start the Chapter Degrees again on January 15th, 2014.  That would be the Mark Master and Past Master Degrees.  Let's crank out some Petitions. On January 1st, 2014, we are calling the meeting off.  New Year's Day.

Loyal L Munn Chapter #96 had its Stated Convocation on November 6, 2013.  We had a dinner prior to the meeting.  We conferred the Most Excellent Master Degree, in conjunction with Palatine Chapter #206, on James Edgell.  We will be participating in James' Royal Arch Degree on November 20, 2013.  L L Munn's next Convocation will be on December 4, 2013.  The Council will be using that meeting for its Degrees.  We will still do business, however.  In January, we are calling off our Stated Convocation on the 1st, because of New Year's Day.  After that we are scheduling Chapter Degrees again.  Let us explain the Royal Arch to some of our Masonic friends and ask them to join us in our great organization.  We have quite a story to tell.  Sometimes it seems that the York Rite is the best kept Masonic Secret there is.  Let's fix that!

Cryptic Council #46, Cryptic Masons, had its most recent Assembly on November 6, 2013.  We had a nice dinner prior to the Assembly.  On that evening, Companion Mark Welch, M.I.Grand Master of Cryptic Masons visited our Council.  Our Thrice Illustrious Master, Gary Berenger, received Companion Welch in proper form.  Companion Welch gave a nice talk on Cryptic Freemasonry and Grand Council programs for the year.  Mark did inform us that the Grand Council is still having its Annual Assembly a week earlier than the Grand Chapter and Grand Commandery, as was done this past summer.  It will be on the 19th of July in Bloomington.  He then stayed and watched us confer the Most Excellent Master Degree on James Edgell.  However, we did received two Petitions for the Council Degrees.  We are scheduled to confer the Royal and Select Master Degrees on December 4, 2013.  Start making plans now.  These Degrees are beautiful and really continue the marvelous story which starts in the Lodge, continues in the Chapter, and then is enhanced in the Council.  Our Thrice Illustrious Master, Gary Berenger, is getting ready for December.  Come on out!.  Dinner at 6:30 PM.  Our January 1st, 2014 Stated Assembly is cancelled due to New Year's Day, and hopefully lots of pork and sauerkraut at my house!

Bethel Commandery #36, Knights Templar visited the Illinois Knights Templar Home at Paxton on October 30, 2013, and sponsored the October Banquet.  We had eight Sir Knights that participated.  They were:  our Commander Ralph Palmer, Bradley Baker, Russell Schlosser, David Truax, Goldon Colditz, Drew Michyeta, Lou Sands, and James N. Newby.  That is the best participation we have had in many years.  We had some first-timers this trip and were given a nice tour of the Home.  Thank you, Ralph Palmer, for rounding up the troops.  Attached will be a photo of that group.  Our November Conclaves have been used for Chapter Degree work.  Our next Commandery event will be our Christmas Libations on December 18, 2013.  We will have a dinner, a guest speaker, some seasonal readings, appropriate toasts, and Chistmas Carols.  Friends and family are welcome.  We will take a headcount in December so we have enough food.  Our January 1, 2014, Stated Conclave is called off due to New year's Day.

Our Commander, Ralph Palmer, is putting out the call for Christmas Baskets for the needy this December.  All Sir Knights are asked to donate some non-perishable (canned and boxed) food items for Christmas dinners.  Please bring these items to the Lodge in early December where they will be assembled.  We will be working with other groups to make this happen.

Ralph Palmer is also having Commandery practices on the off Wednesdays to prepare for our Annual Inspection on April 12, 2014.  Ralph would like all the work to be done by members of Bethel Commandery and by the Officers in their Stations.  Of course another way to learn your parts is to attend some of the Commandery Inspections on Saturday's throughout the winter and spring.  A list of the Chicago area Inspections is at the bottom of this article.

As a result of Ralph Palmer's idea, we have been sending Birthday Cards to the residents of the Illinois Knights Templar Home at Paxton, IL, this past year.  We are continuing each month.  Thank you, Ralph.  We also sent Christmas Cards to all the residents in December, also at Ralph's suggestion.

OK, I took some heat (humorous heat) for referring to Gordon Colditz as Armorer Frank Del Giudice's "Sidekick" in last month's article.  So, we will fix that.  A big "Thank You" to our Team of Armorers, Frank Del Giudice and Gordon Colditz and their Sidekick Gene Pratt!  Let's see how that flies.  And, they are all doing an excellent job with our paraphernalia!

Bethel Commandery has come out with another belt
buckle for sale for benefit of the Knights Templar Eye
Foundation, Inc.  This one is a Royal Arch
Chapter buckle, with the triple tau, and with the
infamous words "Holiness to the Lord"
emblazoned thereon.  This buckle has been commissioned
in honor of Brother, Companion,
and Sir Knight David P. Miller, Past Grand High Priest
and member of the Palatine
York Rite.  It will sell for $50, just as the Knights
Templar
buckle did last year.  We also we able to
obtain a few more Knights Templar buckles since we
had more orders than we could fill.  Let me know if
you are interested.

Our loyal Companion and Sir Knight Jim Newby has volunteered to coordinate the degree work going forward.  Thank you, Jim. He will also work with the Officers of the four respective bodies.  The following is what we have printed for some time.  "As a reminder, at our planning meeting on April 4,
2007, we tentatively decided to appoint one member as
a "Degree Czar" for each of the Palatine York Rite
Bodies.  That would be four individuals.  The thought
was that the number two man in each body would fill
that need.  We need to get more people trained in our
Degree Ritual so we have a backup for each part.
Right now, if certain people are out of town, we are
stuck.  This will also get some of our newer members
actively involved in the affairs of our four York Rite
Bodies.  This will also get the number two man in each
group more prepared for his year as Presiding Officer.
Planning and Preparation.

The York Rite offers many opportunities for us to
serve our fellow man and our communities.  Each of the
Bodies has a charity or several charities that we
support.  Membership in our York Rite Bodies allows us
to fulfill our Obligations and Vows to help those who
are less fortunate.  Let us keep this in our minds as
we go about our daily endeavors.  There is a cloud
surrounding us, that has been built up over the
centuries, that we are a secret organization.  Now is
the time to let those on the outside know who we are.
We should not keep our lamps under the bushel, but
should let our Light so shine before men, that they
may see our good works, and glorify our Father, which
is in Heaven.

Palatine Chapter currently has 173 members.  L L Munn has about 75 members.  Bethel
Commandery now has 201 members.  Of these, 94 are life
members and 13 are 50-year members and are exempt from
Dues.

As a reminder, the new Palatine Masonic Temple is all on one floor and at
ground level.  Therefore it is wheelchair accessible.  No ramp or chairlift
needed.

Our backlog of work is:  Palatine Chapter #206-2;
Loyal L. Munn Chapter #96-0; Cryptic Council #46-3;
Bethel Commandery #36-2.  Let's get those Petitions
in.

Sickness and distress:  Not really sickness, but we have heard that Dolores Hoeckelberg has moved back to Elgin from Arizona since Bob died recently, to be near her children who are in the area.
