February, 2014

Palatine Chapter #206, along with L L Munn Chapter #96, conferred the Mark Master and Past Master Degrees on four candidates on January 15, 2014.  Alex Nawakowski, Claude ???????????, Ken Stortz, and James Regelin are the four.  Sorry I did not catch Claude's last name, but will get it for next time.  James Regelin is a candidate from Cary-Grove Chapter.  We are helping them out.  Ken Stortz is interesting.  He went through the Mark Master Degree in April of 1982.  He found his name in the Book of Marks.  He knew he had started.  He still has his Chapter Penny, but could not remember the timeframe.  He did not finish, we knew that.  So, we gave him the Book of Marks and he went through it and found his name.  He is going through the Degrees again.  Then he will be joining the Council and Commandery.  The Secretary at that time would have been Irving Otto, who has been gone for decades.  This has been an interesting episode.  All's well that ends well.  We will be conferring the Most Excellent Master and Royal Arch Degrees on February 5, 2014.  We expect to have a candidate from Chicago as well that night.  That should make it 5 candidates.  Will be starting at 7:00 because of the length of the degrees.  Dinner at 6:30.

Loyal L Munn Chapter #96 had its Stated Convocation of January 1st cancelled due to the Holiday.  We will be meeting next on February 5th, where we will confer the Most Excellent Master and Royal Arch Degrees, along with Palatine Chapter.  Dinner at 6:30 and the Work at 7:00 PM.  L L Munn helped with the Mark Master and Past Master Degrees on January 15th.  Our High Priest, James Newby, did the Right Worshipful Master in the Mark Master Degree.  Our King did the Right Worshipful Master in the Past Master Degree.  Our Scribe, Jim Newby, did the Senior Warden in both Degrees that night.

Cryptic Council #46, Cryptic Masons, had its January 1st Assembly cancelled due to the Holiday.  Our next Assembly will be on February 5, 2014.  We are allocating that evening to the Chapters for their Work.  We are conferring Council Degrees later in the spring.  Also, there is the Super Excellent Master Degree scheduled for May 10, 2014, in Downers Grove, along with the Royal and Select Master Degrees beforehand.  We may have some of our candidates at that event.

Bethel Commandery #36 had its Christmas Libations on December 18, 2014.  We had a dinner at prior to the Libations.  We had a nice gathering of our members and many wives and family members, as well.  Leading our Christmas Carols was Richard Pineapple Pugh.  We had four Sir Knights reading the four Christmas Messages from the Grand Commandery and Grand Encampment.  They were Gary Berenger, Generalissimo; Ralph Palmer, Commander; Andrew Michyeta, III, Grand Junior Warden; and Russell Schlosser, Deputy Grand Commander.  Our Guest speaker for the evening was the Rev. Sue Allen, Pastor of Living Lord Lutheran Church, Bartlett, IL.  It was a nice evening and all enjoyed it.  Earlier in the month, on the 14th, we visited St. Elmo Commandery #64 in Chicago.  Present from bethel were Russell Schlosser, Andrew Michyeta, and Bradley Baker.  Bethel Commandery is scheduled to confer the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and Order of Malta on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.  We will be getting our candidates ready for their Order of the Temple.  Our Annual Inspection is on April 12, 2014.  It is a Dais Inspection, since Russ Schlosser is the Deputy Grand Commander.  We should have a good group in attendance on that day.  We are having Commandery practices now at Medinah Temple since those types of gatherings can no longer be held at the Palatine Temple.  Our next practice is January 22nd at Medinah, at 6:30 PM.  On February 15th, the Commandery will do a Full Form Opening, and conduct other business that may be forthcoming.  Dinners prior to each Conclave, of course.

As a point of interest, we have heard that our good friend David P. Miller, is in the Grand Lodge Line in Arizona.  I believe as Senior Grand Steward.  Keep on truckin', Dave!

Ralph Palmer is also having Commandery practices on the off Wednesdays to prepare for our Annual Inspection on April 12, 2014.  Ralph would like all the work to be done by members of Bethel Commandery and by the Officers in their Stations.  Of course another way to learn your parts is to attend some of the Commandery Inspections on Saturday's throughout the winter and spring.  A list of the Chicago area Inspections is at the bottom of this article.

As a result of Ralph Palmer's idea, we have been sending Birthday Cards to the residents of the Illinois Knights Templar Home at Paxton, IL, this past year.  We are continuing each month.  Thank you, Ralph.  We also sent Christmas Cards to all the residents in December, also at Ralph's suggestion.

In conjunction with our end-of-year events, Annual Meetings, etc, if we have more candidate Petitions, we may confer Chapter Degrees to get a running start on next fall.  No sense dragging our feet.

Bethel Commandery has come out with another belt
buckle for sale for benefit of the Knights Templar Eye
Foundation, Inc.  This one is a Royal Arch
Chapter buckle, with the triple tau, and with the
infamous words "Holiness to the Lord"
emblazoned thereon.  This buckle has been commissioned
in honor of Brother, Companion,
and Sir Knight David P. Miller, Past Grand High Priest
and member of the Palatine
York Rite.  It will sell for $50, just as the Knights
buckle did last year.  We also we able to
obtain a few more Knights Templar buckles since we
had more orders than we could fill.  Let me know if
you are interested.

Our loyal Companion and Sir Knight Jim Newby has volunteered to coordinate the degree work going forward.  Thank you, Jim. He will also work with the Officers of the four respective bodies.  The following is what we have printed for some time.  "As a reminder, at our planning meeting on April 4,
2007, we tentatively decided to appoint one member as
a "Degree Czar" for each of the Palatine York Rite
Bodies.  That would be four individuals.  The thought
was that the number two man in each body would fill
that need.  We need to get more people trained in our
Degree Ritual so we have a backup for each part.
Right now, if certain people are out of town, we are
stuck.  This will also get some of our newer members
actively involved in the affairs of our four York Rite
Bodies.  This will also get the number two man in each
group more prepared for his year as Presiding Officer.
Planning and Preparation.

The York Rite offers many opportunities for us to
serve our fellow man and our communities.  Each of the
Bodies has a charity or several charities that we
support.  Membership in our York Rite Bodies allows us
to fulfill our Obligations and Vows to help those who
are less fortunate.  Let us keep this in our minds as
we go about our daily endeavors.  There is a cloud
surrounding us, that has been built up over the
centuries, that we are a secret organization.  Now is
the time to let those on the outside know who we are.
We should not keep our lamps under the bushel, but
should let our Light so shine before men, that they
may see our good works, and glorify our Father, which
is in Heaven.

Palatine Chapter currently has 173 members.  L L Munn has about 75 members.  Bethel
Commandery now has 201 members.  Of these, 94 are life
members and 13 are 50-year members and are exempt from

As a reminder, the new Palatine Masonic Temple is all on one floor and at
ground level.  Therefore it is wheelchair accessible.  No ramp or chairlift
