The Officers and Knights of Bethel Commandery #36, Knights Templar

Palatine Chapter #206, along with L L Munn Chapter #96, conferred the Most Excellent Master and Royal Arch Mason Degrees on Wednesday, February 5, 2014.  It was a nice evening.  Exalted were: Claude ????????????, Alex Nawakowski, and Ken Stortz from our Chapter.  We had James Regelin from Cary Grove Chapter and Ryan Santos and Reynel Espiritu from Logan Chapter.  We were honored to have James Patton and Rich Carnall present to assist us in the Royal Arch Degree.  We have to fill those slots soon so we do not have to keep calling these guys in.  Maybe in the Fall we will be proficient.  We all enjoyed a dinner prior to the work.  We had about 25 Companions present for the evening.  The fact that the sewer from the building was frozen solid, did not affect us one bit.  I am sure it is thawed out by now.  Our next Convocation is on the 19th of February.  We will be using that night for a Commandery practice, plus any business that may come to order.  In March we will be having our Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner on our Convocation night.  A big thanks to Frank Del Giudice and Gordon Colditz for handling our paraphernalia.

Loyal L Munn Chapter #96, along with Palatine Chapter #206, conferred the Most Excellent Master and Royal Arch Mason Degrees on Wednesday, February 5, 2014.  Our own James B. Newby did the Right Worshipful Master part for the 6th Degree and James N. Newby did the Senior Warden part in the same Degree.  Nice father-Son team.  Everything worked out great.  I will not repeat the six candidates names, since they are all listed in the paragraph above.  I will try include a photo of that Chapter Crowd from the 5th of February.  Our next Convocation will be on March 5, 2014.  On that night we will be conferring the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and the Order of Malta.  We should have four candidates of our own and a possible three more from Aurora.

Cryptic Council #46, Cryptic Masons, had its February 5th Assembly used by the 2 Royal Arch Chapters for Degree Work.  Our next Assembly will be on March 5, 2014.  We are allocating that evening to the Commandery for their Inspection preparation.  We will be conferring Council Degrees later in the spring.  Also, there is the Super Excellent Master Degree scheduled for May 10, 2014, in Downers Grove, along with the Royal and Select Master Degrees beforehand.  We may have some of our candidates at that event.  Stay tuned.

Bethel Commandery has been having practices on the off Wednesdays.  On the 5th of March we will be conferring the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and the Order of Malta on 4 of our candidates, p[lus a possible three more from Aurora.  On March 19th we will be hosting our Annual Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner for benefit of the Illinois Knights Templar Home at Paxton, IL.  That is always a fun event.  Our Annual Inspection is coming up on April 12, 2014.  Several of our Sir Knights have been visiting other Commandery Inspections through this winter.  On February 8, 2014, four of us were present at Silangan Commandery #93: Russell Schlosser, Andrew Michyeta, Ralph Palmer, and Bradley Baker.  On February 1st, Russell Schlosser, Andrew Michyeta, and Bradley Baker visited Trinity Commandery #80's Annual Inspection.  On January 25th, Russell Schlosser, Ralph Palmer, and Andrew Michyeta were present at Mizpa Commandery #53's Annual Inspection.  Yours Truly was out of town in Pennsylvania.  Don't forget, dinners before each meeting on the first and third Wednesdays at 6:30 PM.  We wish Gene Pratt a good winter as he spends it in Hawaii (the Bum).

Several of our members went to AMD weekend in Reston, VA, this month.  I missed because of the bad weather.  I did not want to get stuck there and miss my Gardening School.  I understand thye all had a good time.

As a point of interest, we have heard that our good friend David P. Miller, is in the Grand Lodge Line in Arizona.  I believe as Senior Grand Steward.  Keep on truckin', Dave!

Ralph Palmer is also having Commandery practices on the off Wednesdays to prepare for our Annual Inspection on April 12, 2014.  Ralph would like all the work to be done by members of Bethel Commandery and by the Officers in their Stations.  Of course another way to learn your parts is to attend some of the Commandery Inspections on Saturday's throughout the winter and spring.  A list of the Chicago area Inspections is at the bottom of this article.

As a result of Ralph Palmer's idea, we have been sending Birthday Cards to the residents of the Illinois Knights Templar Home at Paxton, IL, this past year.  We are continuing each month.  Thank you, Ralph.  We also sent Christmas Cards to all the residents in December, also at Ralph's suggestion.

In conjunction with our end-of-year events, Annual Meetings, etc, if we have more candidate Petitions, we may confer Chapter Degrees to get a running start on next fall.  No sense dragging our feet.

Bethel Commandery has come out with another belt
buckle for sale for benefit of the Knights Templar Eye
Foundation, Inc.  This one is a Royal Arch
Chapter buckle, with the triple tau, and with the
infamous words "Holiness to the Lord"
emblazoned thereon.  This buckle has been commissioned
in honor of Brother, Companion,
and Sir Knight David P. Miller, Past Grand High Priest
and member of the Palatine
York Rite.  It will sell for $50, just as the Knights
buckle did last year.  We also we able to
obtain a few more Knights Templar buckles since we
had more orders than we could fill.  Let me know if
you are interested.

Our loyal Companion and Sir Knight Jim Newby has volunteered to coordinate the degree work going forward.  Thank you, Jim. He will also work with the Officers of the four respective bodies.  The following is what we have printed for some time.  "As a reminder, at our planning meeting on April 4,
2007, we tentatively decided to appoint one member as
a "Degree Czar" for each of the Palatine York Rite
Bodies.  That would be four individuals.  The thought
was that the number two man in each body would fill
that need.  We need to get more people trained in our
Degree Ritual so we have a backup for each part.
Right now, if certain people are out of town, we are
stuck.  This will also get some of our newer members
actively involved in the affairs of our four York Rite
Bodies.  This will also get the number two man in each
group more prepared for his year as Presiding Officer.
Planning and Preparation.

The York Rite offers many opportunities for us to
serve our fellow man and our communities.  Each of the
Bodies has a charity or several charities that we
support.  Membership in our York Rite Bodies allows us
to fulfill our Obligations and Vows to help those who
are less fortunate.  Let us keep this in our minds as
we go about our daily endeavors.  There is a cloud
surrounding us, that has been built up over the
centuries, that we are a secret organization.  Now is
the time to let those on the outside know who we are.
We should not keep our lamps under the bushel, but
should let our Light so shine before men, that they
may see our good works, and glorify our Father, which
is in Heaven.

Palatine Chapter currently has 176 members.  L L Munn has about 75 members.  Bethel
Commandery now has 201 members.  Of these, 94 are life
members and 13 are 50-year members and are exempt from

As a reminder, the new Palatine Masonic Temple is all on one floor and at
ground level.  Therefore it is wheelchair accessible.  No ramp or chairlift
